About Oil Changes at Iron Horse

Canon City driving is hard on oil. Sitting in summer traffic on Royal Gorge Boulevard, crawling up Skyline Drive, running the grades on US 50 toward Texas Creek and back β€” that's heat, load and low-speed running, which is exactly the "severe service" schedule buried in the back of your owner's manual. Add short winter trips around Lincoln Park where the engine never fully warms and moisture never cooks out of the oil, and the interval on the windshield sticker starts looking optimistic.

So we do it properly. Correct grade and capacity for your engine, a real filter, and the drain plug torqued instead of gorilla'd. Then, since the car is already in the air, we actually look: oil leaks at the pan and rear main, torn CV boots from gravel roads, coolant weeping, brake pad life, tires wearing on one shoulder. An oil change is the cheapest chance you get to catch a bigger repair early, and we'd rather show you a seeping gasket now than replace an engine later.

On cost, the two things that move the number are the oil itself and how much your engine holds. Full synthetic costs more per quart than conventional, and a modern turbo four or a diesel with a large sump takes considerably more oil than an older V6 β€” that's the whole story. Many newer engines are specified for synthetic and shouldn't be run on anything else, and we'll tell you which side of that line your vehicle sits on before we start.

Iron Horse is based in Pueblo, roughly forty minutes east of Canon City on US 50 β€” an easy run for Fremont County drivers, and worth it when you want the shop that handles the serious engine work to also be the shop watching your oil. We're a small crew keeping a real schedule, so call ahead and we'll set a time that works instead of leaving you sitting in a waiting room. Call or text (719) 240-3165 to get on the books.
