A whine that rises and falls with vehicle speed — not engine RPM — is coming from the differential gears. If it whines under acceleration but quiets down when you let off, that's typically the ring and pinion gear mesh. If it whines while coasting, the pattern is different but the source is the same.
Catch it early and it's often low or burnt fluid plus a bearing. Wait too long and you're buying gears.
Howl or Rumble That Follows the Wheels
A rumble or growl that tracks with wheel speed and gets worse in turns often points to a carrier or pinion bearing. It's easy to confuse with a bad wheel bearing, which is why guessing is expensive. A real diagnosis means driving the vehicle, listening in both directions, and pulling the diff cover to look at the gear wear pattern.
Clunk When You Shift Into Drive
A solid clunk when you put it in gear, or when you go from coast to throttle, usually means excessive backlash, worn U-joints, or a loose yoke. Sometimes it's the differential, sometimes it's the driveshaft. Those are two very different repairs.
Fluid Leaks Behind the Wheels
Dark, heavy oil weeping around the axle tubes or the pinion is a leaking seal. Gear oil smells strong — you'll know it. A seal is a modest repair. Running the differential dry is not.
