5 OIL CHANGE MYTHS THAT COST YOU MONEY
The 3,000-mile oil change is the most successful marketing campaign in automotive history. It made Jiffy Lube. It made Valvoline. And it cost Americans billions of dollars in unnecessary services. Here's what Richard at Iron Horse Automotive Repair wants every Pueblo driver to know.
Myth #1: 'Change your oil every 3,000 miles'
Reality: with modern synthetic oils and modern engines, the real interval is 5,000β10,000 miles depending on your specific vehicle. Read your owner's manual β not the windshield sticker the quick-lube put there. Following the 3,000-mile myth costs the average Pueblo driver $200+ per year in unnecessary oil changes.
Myth #2: 'Synthetic oil causes leaks in older cars'
Reality: this hasn't been true for 20+ years. Older synthetic oils had different chemistry that could shrink seals. Modern synthetics are seal-friendly. Synthetic generally protects better in Pueblo's temperature swings (cold mornings, hot afternoons) and pays for itself in extended drain intervals.
Myth #3: 'Dark oil means it's time to change'
Reality: oil darkens within hours of running through a clean engine β that's the additives doing their job (suspending soot and contaminants instead of letting them stick). Dark color is normal. The actual measure is interval (miles or time), not color.
Myth #4: 'You can use any oil β they're all the same'
Reality: modern engines specify particular weights (5W-20, 0W-20, 5W-30, etc.) for specific tolerances inside the engine. Using the wrong weight, even close, reduces fuel economy and accelerates wear. Always match what's on the oil cap or in the manual.
Myth #5: 'A multi-point inspection during an oil change is helpful'
Reality: at chain shops, it's a sales script. Iron Horse does inspect during oil changes, but we only flag actual problems. If your air filter has 5,000 miles of dust on it but is still 6 months from due, we'll tell you that β not 'urgent replacement recommended.'
