EVAP LEAK CODES IN PUEBLO: IT'S OFTEN THE GAS CAP

Your fuel tank gives off vapor. Instead of venting it into the air, the EVAP system captures it in a charcoal canister and feeds it back into the engine to burn. It's a sealed loop, and your car tests that seal on its own schedule. When it finds a leak — even a pinhole — it sets a code and turns on the light.

A gas cap that isn't clicked tight, or one with a dried-out rubber seal, is the single most common cause. Caps get brittle in Pueblo's dry heat and sun, and a 6-year-old cap often won't hold a seal anymore.

Try this first: tighten the cap until it clicks three times, then drive normally for a few days. Many cars will clear the code on their own once they re-run the test and pass. If it clears, you just saved yourself a repair bill.

If the light stays on, the leak is somewhere else in the loop. Common culprits:

• Cracked or dry-rotted vent hoses — rubber lines under the car take a beating from heat and road grime
• Purge valve stuck open — can also cause hard starts after fueling and a rough idle
• Vent solenoid failure — often dirt or moisture related
• Charcoal canister damage — cracked housings, usually from age or a hard hit
• Rust or a pinhole at the filler neck — more common on older trucks

Finding these isn't a guessing game. We use a smoke machine that pressurizes the system with harmless vapor, then we watch where it escapes. That's the difference between a diagnosis and a parts-swap.

An EVAP leak won't strand you. But the light stays on, which means it can't warn you about the *next* problem — a misfire, an overheating issue, something that does matter. And a stuck purge valve can genuinely hurt your fuel economy and idle quality.
