What a Parasitic Drain Actually Is
Your car never fully shuts off. The radio memory, the alarm, the body control module, the keyless entry receiver — all of it sips a small amount of current with the key out. Normal is roughly 25 to 85 milliamps once everything goes to sleep, which can take 20–45 minutes after you close the door. When something stays awake and pulls half an amp or more, a healthy battery is flat in a day or two.
Signs It's a Drain, Not a Bad Battery
- The car starts fine after a jump and runs fine all day
- It only dies after sitting overnight or over a weekend
- A load test says the battery is good, and the alternator charges normally
- It's happened with two different batteries

Then it's fuse-by-fuse — pull one, watch the number, put it back — until the reading drops. Once we know the circuit, we chase it to the component. It's methodical work, and it's why a lot of shops would rather sell you a battery than run it down.
