AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES OF FOUNTAIN INN: SC OR CO?

Automotive Services of Fountain Inn is an independent repair shop located in Fountain Inn, South Carolina β€” roughly 1,450 miles east of Pueblo. We're Iron Horse Automotive Repair, and we can't fix your car if you're in Greenville County; you want the actual South Carolina shop. But a lot of people who type that phrase are actually looking for Fountain, Colorado β€” the town 38 miles north of us on I-25, between Pueblo and Colorado Springs β€” or they're in Pueblo and got a bad autocomplete. If that's you, this page is worth your five minutes: what automotive service actually costs in Pueblo County in 2026, what we do, and the specific situations where you should drive past our door.

The Fountain Inn vs. Fountain mix-up, cleared up

Two different places, one confusing search box:

  • Fountain Inn, SC β€” population around 11,000, southeast of Greenville. Automotive Services of Fountain Inn operates there. We have no affiliation with them and no opinion on their work.
  • Fountain, CO β€” population around 30,000, El Paso County, about a 35–40 minute drive up I-25 from downtown Pueblo.

If you're in Fountain, Colorado and looking at a $60 oil change, do not drive to Pueblo for it. Seventy-six miles round trip at 25 mpg and $3.15/gallon is about $9.60 in fuel plus 80 minutes of your life, to save maybe $10. That math loses. Fountain and Security-Widefield have competent independent shops. Come to us when the job is big enough that the drive rounds to zero β€” a transmission rebuild, an engine replacement, a diagnosis two shops have already whiffed on.

What automotive service actually costs in Pueblo, 2026

Real ranges from our board. Prices move with parts costs and your specific vehicle, so treat these as the range we quote from, not a promise:

  • Conventional oil change: $45–$65. Full synthetic, 5–6 quarts: $79–$115. Diesel and large-sump trucks (Power Stroke, Cummins) run $130–$190 because you're buying 12–15 quarts.
  • Diagnostic time: $130–$165 for the first hour. We apply it to the repair if you have us do the work. Anyone advertising "free check engine light diagnosis" is reading a code, which takes 90 seconds and tells you almost nothing β€” a P0420 doesn't mean "catalytic converter," it means "start diagnosing."
  • Front brake pads and rotors, one axle: $340–$620 on most sedans and crossovers. Half-ton trucks and 3/4-ton: $520–$900.
  • Alternator, parts and labor: $480–$950 depending on how buried it is. Some transverse V6s need the serpentine and a motor mount moved.
  • Water pump: $520–$1,100. Timing-belt-driven pumps land at the top of that because you're doing the belt anyway.
  • AC compressor replacement with receiver/drier and evac-recharge: $900–$1,700. R-1234yf systems on 2018+ vehicles cost noticeably more than R-134a β€” the refrigerant alone runs $80–$140 a pound versus around $12.
  • Automatic transmission fluid and filter service: $190–$340. A rebuild or reman unit installed: $3,200–$6,500.

Shop labor rates in Pueblo generally sit between $120 and $175 an hour. The Pueblo dealerships are commonly $175–$225. That gap is why a four-hour job at a dealer can cost $300 more than the same job here, and also why some jobs genuinely belong at the dealer β€” more on that below.

When you should NOT hire us

The part of this page that costs us money. Read it anyway.

Your car is worth less than the repair, and you have somewhere else to put the money. A 2009 Impala with 218,000 miles and a $3,400 transmission is not a repair decision, it's a math problem. That car is worth $1,800–$2,800 in Pueblo on a good day. We will tell you this before we take your deposit, and we've told probably 30 people this year to sell the car instead. If a shop quotes a rebuild on a car like that without raising the question, that's your signal.

The job needs the dealer's tools or the dealer's money. Straight list:

  • Open recalls and factory warranty work. Free at the dealer. Not free here. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls first β€” it takes 30 seconds.
  • Powertrain warranty still active β€” many are 5 years/60,000 miles, some Hyundai/Kia are 10/100,000. Let them pay.
  • EV and plug-in hybrid high-voltage systems. Battery packs, inverters, HV service disconnects. We service the brakes, tires, suspension, coolant loops and 12V system on a Model Y or a Bolt. We don't open the pack.
  • Certain module programming and immobilizer/key jobs on some European and newer domestic platforms where the factory scan tool and a subscription are the only path.
  • ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement or a control-arm change. Some vehicles need a static calibration in a bay with targets and specific floor tolerances. We'll tell you when we have to sublet it, and yes, that adds $250–$450.

You need it done today and the part is a special order. Pueblo has decent parts supply β€” most common parts arrive same day, some within an hour. But a factory-only sensor for a low-volume model often means overnight from Denver at best, sometimes 3–5 business days. If you're mid-road-trip with a hotel bill running, a shop that already has the part on the shelf beats a shop you like better.

You want the cheapest possible number and nothing else. We use quality aftermarket or OE parts and we don't install customer-supplied parts on safety-critical systems. If your budget is $180 for brakes and a friend has the pads already, we're the wrong shop, and that's fine.

> The most expensive repair in Pueblo is the second one β€” the $700 "fixed it" that didn't, followed by the $1,400 that actually did.

We also get things wrong. Intermittent electrical faults β€” a wire chafed inside a harness that only opens over a specific bump β€” can take three visits. Any shop that tells you otherwise is selling confidence, not diagnosis. Ask about the warranty. Ours, and any shop worth using, should be at least 24 months/24,000 miles on parts and labor.

What actually breaks cars in Pueblo County

Pueblo sits at 4,692 feet, and the driving here is harder on vehicles than a flatland market:

  • Heat plus altitude cooks cooling systems. We see 40-plus days over 90Β°F most summers, and lower atmospheric pressure means a weak radiator cap costs you real boil-over margin. A $22 cap is the cheapest insurance in the shop. See our [summer cooling system check](/blog/summer-cooling-system-check-pueblo) before June.
  • Monument Hill and Wolf Creek punish brakes and transmissions. The I-25 climb north of Pueblo tops out around 7,350 feet; Wolf Creek Pass hits 10,857. Long descents fade tired pads and overheat transmission fluid that was due 20,000 miles ago.
  • Magnesium chloride on winter roads eats brake lines, fuel lines, and electrical connectors. We find corroded rear brake lines on 12-to-18-year-old trucks constantly.
  • Dust and blowing sand load engine air filters and cabin filters faster than the 30,000-mile book interval suggests. Check at 15,000.
  • Short trips around town never fully burn off moisture in the oil. If your commute from Blende or Salt Creek is under 15 minutes, use the severe-service interval, not the normal one.

No emissions test, no safety inspection β€” that's a trap. Pueblo County isn't in Colorado's AIR emissions program area, and Colorado has no annual safety inspection for passenger vehicles. Nothing forces you to have anyone look at the car. Plenty of vehicles here run for years on a tire with 2/32" tread and a leaking strut because no one made the owner check. Confirm requirements with the Pueblo County Clerk when you register.

How to vet any shop, including us

  • Ask for the written estimate before authorization, itemized parts and labor. Colorado law is on your side here; a shop that resists is telling you something.
  • Ask what the diagnostic fee is and whether it applies to the repair.
  • Ask them to show you the failed part β€” or a photo of it on your car. We do this by default.
  • Ask about warranty term in months and miles, in writing.
  • Get a second quote on anything over $1,000. We'd rather lose a job than have you feel cornered into it.
