  • Governor cut-out: 120–135 psi. Cut-in: 100–110 psi. If cut-out is drifting to 145 psi or the compressor never stops, the governor or unloader is done.
  • Build time: 85 to 100 psi in 45 seconds or less at 600–900 RPM on a dual system. Slower than that means a restricted line, a worn compressor, or a leak.
  • Static leak-down: no more than 2 psi/minute on a single vehicle, 3 psi/minute on a combination. With the brakes applied: 3 and 4 psi/minute.
  • Low-air warning must activate at or above 60 psi. Spring brakes should set between 20 and 45 psi.
  • Pushrod stroke: under 2 inches on a standard Type 30 chamber, under 2.5 inches on a long-stroke Type 30. Long-stroke chambers are square-cornered or stamped "LS" on the clamp band.

That stroke measurement is the one nobody does. It takes about 12 minutes for a six-wheel-end vehicle with a ruler and a pry bar, and it is the most common brake violation written in North America. During CVSA's annual Brake Safety Week, roughly 12–13% of inspected commercial vehicles get placed out of service for brake violations, and the largest single bucket is out-of-adjustment brakes. The out-of-service threshold is blunt: 20% or more of the brakes on the vehicle defective and you are parked — on a five-axle combination that's two wheel ends.

Why Pueblo Specifically Chews Up Air Systems

Pueblo sits at 4,692 feet in a climate that averages roughly 12 inches of precipitation a year and spends most of the summer with dew points under 40°F. Dry air feels like a gift to an air brake system, and it half is: a fleet running the Gulf Coast will dump a cup of water out of a wet tank every week, while a Pueblo truck may drain nearly dry for a month straight.

That's exactly the trap. Owners drain the tanks twice, get nothing, and stop draining. Then the August monsoon pattern parks over the Arkansas Valley, humidity jumps for ten days, the dryer — which nobody has serviced in six years — passes moisture straight through, and that water sits in the bottom of a supply tank until the first 8°F morning in January. Ice in a relay valve does not announce itself. It just delays or blocks air to an axle, and you find out on the descent.

The topography compounds it. A truck loaded out of Pueblo runs I-25 north climbing to 7,352 feet at Monument Hill, or US 50 west toward Cañon City and eventually Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet, or south over the Greenhorn grade toward Walsenburg and Raton Pass at 7,834 feet.   • Dryer purge function, tank drain, and a check of what actually comes out of each tank

You get the measured numbers on paper, not a green/yellow/red sticker. If a wheel end measures 1.9 inches of stroke, that's legal today and a problem in 4,000 miles — you deserve to know both facts. When Air Brake Repair Isn't Worth It — and Who Should Not Call Us

This section will cost us work. It should.

Do not bring us a Class 8 tractor needing a federal annual inspection. We are a light- and medium-duty shop. If you need a 49 CFR 396.17 annual inspection performed by a qualified inspector under §396.19, with the sticker, go to a dedicated heavy-duty truck shop. Expect $150–$300 for the inspection itself. We will not pretend otherwise to keep a bay full.

Do not spend $3,000 restoring air brakes on a $6,000 vehicle you plan to sell. If you have a 1994 box truck with corroded tanks, a failed compressor, seized s-cams on three wheel ends, and rusted-through air lines, the honest quote is $4,000–$7,000 and the truck is worth less than that running. Corroded steel air tanks are a stop sign. A tank with pitting or a weeping seam gets replaced, not patched, and replacement tanks plus brackets and plumbing run $400–$900 each. If a shop offers to weld a pressure vessel that holds 130 psi three feet from your fuel tank, leave.

Warranty and recall work belongs at the dealer. If your chassis is under a Freightliner, Ford F-650/750, or Spartan warranty, or there's an open NHTSA recall on the valve or ABS module, we cannot reimburse you and the dealer can do it for free. Check your VIN before you pay anybody.

Piecemeal repair on a system that needs a full overhaul is money burned. Replacing one chamber on a vehicle where all six are 18 years old means you'll be back twice more within a year, paying the same 1.5 hours of setup labor each time. Doing all six at once saves roughly $400–$600 in duplicated labor. If your budget only covers one chamber right now, that's a real constraint — but understand you're paying a premium for the installment plan.
